EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH

Dear Editor: On Friday,2006, a letter to the editor appeared in the Contra Costa Times in support of the use of embryo stem cells for research. It was a nasty  letter attacking "Christians "and the President for vetoing the federal legislation that would have provided federal funds for this despicable research.
As both a Christian and a pro-life person I would like to respond to some of the claims made in this letter.
One claim was that the embryos would be discarded anyway. My answer to this claim would be to quote mother Theresa of Calcutta as she looked at the homeless, ill, thrown away human beings living on the streets of India and cherished them, nursed them, and fed them.
She didn’t ship them off to a research laboratory because no one else wanted them.
Another claim in this letter asked the question ."what would Jesus say about stem cell research?"My answer to this question would be—The people and groups represented by the letter’s author, are trying very hard to re position Jesus as a community activist, The grand humanitarian symbol, the liberator of all humans from the grasp of religion.capitalism.etc.
Yet we know what Jesus would say about the use of any human being as a guinea pig for science. Thou shalt not kill.! Jesus was very clear about what should happen to any one who harmed even the least of my brethren. Jesus was not a lobbyist for the health and science industry.

Take away God, all respect for civil laws, all regard for even the most necessary institutions disappears; justice is scouted; the very liberty that belongs to the law of nature is trodden underfoot; and men go so far as to destroy the very structure of the family, which is the first and firmest foundation of the social structure.
- St. Pius X, Jucunda Sane, March 12, 1904
