At Work.Life, we believe that traditional hierarchical structures don’t always fit today’s fast-paced, ever-changing business landscape. That’s why we’ve embraced an adhocratic workplace culture – a system that prioritises adaptability, collaboration, and empowerment over rigid bureaucracy.

An adhocracy might sound unconventional, but for us, it’s been the perfect fit for our growth journey. Here’s why we’ve adopted it and how it could potentially transform your organisation too.

What is an adhocracy?

An adhocracy is a flexible organisational design built on adaptability and creativity rather than rigid hierarchies or structures. Instead of confining team members to predefined roles and processes, adhocracies enable people to come together as needed to tackle challenges, drive innovation, and deliver results.

In an adhocratic workplace:

  • Decision-making is decentralised and pushed to where the expertise exists
  • Collaboration is fluid, with team members contributing based on their skills and passion rather than job titles
  • Innovation thrives because bureaucratic barriers don’t impede creative thinking
  • Responsiveness to change becomes a core organisational capability
Why we chose an adhocracy at Work.Life

When we founded Work.Life, we set out to create something different – not just in the coworking spaces we design but in how we operate as a business. An adhocratic approach reflects the values we want to embody every day.

  1. Adaptability in a fast-moving industry

The flexible workspace sector is constantly evolving. From the rise of hybrid work models to rapidly changing customer expectations, we’ve had to pivot and adapt quickly throughout our journey. An adhocratic structure gives us the agility to stay ahead of market shifts and respond to opportunities faster than more traditionally structured competitors.

During the pandemic, this adaptability proved invaluable as we quickly reimagined our spaces and services to meet new safety requirements and changing work patterns.

  1. Fostering workplace innovation

We want every team member to feel empowered to share their ideas, regardless of their position or tenure. Our adhocratic approach removes hierarchical barriers and encourages everyone to think creatively about improving our member experience, workspace design, and business operations.

Some of our most successful initiatives have come from team members who spotted opportunities outside their formal responsibilities but had the freedom to pursue them.

  1. Putting people first

At the heart of Work.Life is the belief that happy teams create exceptional experiences for our members. Adhocratic organisational design is fundamentally about trust, collaboration, and giving people the autonomy to make decisions. It’s a culture that prioritises people and their capabilities over rigid processes and control mechanisms.

How an adhocracy looks in practice at Work.Life

Here’s how we make adhocracy work day-to-day:

  •  Fluid teams and project-based collaboration

Rather than sticking rigidly to job descriptions, our team members often wear multiple hats and form cross-functional teams based on the challenge at hand. If someone has an idea or a skill to contribute, they’re encouraged to step up, whether it’s their “official” responsibility or not.

For example, when launching a new location, we bring together team members from operations, marketing, sales, and design in a temporary project team rather than managing it through separate departmental silos.

  • Empowered decision-making

We trust our people to make decisions at all levels of the organisation. From designing marketing campaigns to resolving member issues, decisions aren’t held up by layers of approvals. This decentralised decision-making empowers our team and keeps our operations nimble.

Our community managers, for instance, have significant autonomy to create location-specific events and initiatives that respond to their unique member communities.

  • Encouraging experimentation and calculated risk-taking

Adhocracy is all about trying new approaches. We embrace a test-and-learn methodology, recognising that failure is often the first step toward innovation.

Whether it’s launching a new membership type or redesigning a workspace feature, we encourage experimental approaches backed by rapid feedback loops.

The business benefits we’ve experienced

Our adhocratic approach has allowed Work.Life to grow in a way that feels authentic to our values. It’s not always straightforward – letting go of traditional control mechanisms can be challenging – but the benefits have been substantial:

  1. Accelerated problem-solving: When challenges arise, our teams come together quickly without bureaucratic delays. During the early days of the pandemic, this enabled us to implement new safety protocols and communicate changes to members in a matter of days rather than weeks.
  2. Enhanced innovation: Our adhocratic culture creates space for new ideas to emerge from anywhere in the organisation. Many of our most popular workspace features and community initiatives began as suggestions from team members who weren’t in “innovation” roles.
  3. Stronger team engagement: Our team members consistently report feeling trusted and valued, which has translated to higher retention rates and performance. Our collaborative work environment fosters a sense of ownership that traditional hierarchies often struggle to achieve.
  4. Improved member experience: The flexibility of our organisational approach allows us to be more responsive to member needs. When feedback comes in, we can quickly assemble the right people to address it without navigating complex approval processes.
Is adhocracy right for your business?

Adhocracy isn’t universally applicable. It requires:

  • A high degree of trust in your team’s capabilities
  • Comfort with ambiguity and emergent strategies
  • A culture that values collaboration over control
  • Team members who thrive with autonomy
  • Clear shared values to guide decentralised decisions

For companies in dynamic industries or those looking to foster innovation and agility, it can be transformative. However, organisations with highly regulated operations or those requiring strict standardisation might find a hybrid approach more suitable.

Implementing adhocratic principles in your organisation

If you’re interested in bringing elements of adhocracy to your business, consider starting with:

  1. Identifying areas for experimentation – Begin with projects or departments where flexibility would add the most value
  2. Building trust gradually – Incrementally increase team autonomy as confidence grows
  3. Creating clear guardrails – Define the boundaries within which teams can make independent decisions
  4. Celebrating initiative – Recognise and reward those who step outside their formal roles to contribute
  5. Developing collaboration skills – Invest in training that helps people work effectively across traditional boundaries
Final thoughts

At Work.Life, we’ve built more than just coworking spaces – we’ve created a flexible organisational culture that embodies our values. Adopting an adhocratic approach has enabled us to stay nimble, innovate continuously, and truly put people at the centre of everything we do.

If there’s one piece of advice I’d offer to other founders and business leaders, it’s this: don’t be afraid to challenge traditional organisational structures. Whether you choose a fully adhocratic model or incorporate elements of flexibility into a more traditional framework, what matters most is building a culture that aligns with your mission and empowers your people to thrive.

Let’s embrace organisational innovation together. After all, reimagining how we work is the first step toward reimagining what work can be.

At Work.Life, our spaces are more than just places to work—they’re thoughtfully designed environments that prioritise both functionality and community. We’re bringing that to life in Farringdon, St Cross Street, with an environment that from the moment members walk in, is supportive, inspiring, and community led.

A functional welcome

One of the first things you’ll notice upon entering St Cross Street is the kitchen. Why? Because the kitchen is the heart of any home, and we wanted to bring that same warmth to our space. It’s where connections happen naturally, whether over a coffee or a quick chat between meetings.

Plus, the kitchen is where our membership team sits. The idea here is simple: you’re welcomed right into the community. Our team isn’t secluded in an office, they’re front and centre, ready to assist or just say hello. We believe in creating spaces where people feel an instant sense of belonging, and placing our team at the core of the space helps establish that immediately.

Designed for flow

Practicality is woven into the very layout of St Cross Street. From the way workstations are positioned, to the easily accessible meeting rooms and the placement of breakout zones, every detail has been considered to enhance productivity.

You should be able to move around the space efficiently, with no disruptions to your day. Plus, we have some new additions to St Cross Street, so we really mean it when we say we’ve got everything under one roof for you; a podcast room, event space, roof terrace and board room with discounted rates for Work.Life members!

Community at its core

Our members aren’t just looking for a place to work—they’re looking for a community to be part of. That’s why the common areas are open, inviting, and filled with flexible seating arrangements that encourage connection.

Whether you’re a solo entrepreneur or part of a larger team, you’ll find that St Cross Street (just like it’s 12 siblings) fosters a sense of togetherness you won’t find anywhere else.

Insights from our Project Manager

Annie, our project manager for new buildings, has been deeply involved in shaping the St Cross Street space. She shares her thoughts on how the design reflects Work.Life’s values:

“Our goal with St Cross Street was to create a space that feels intuitive, where members can move seamlessly between focus work, collaboration, and community. We prioritised an open, welcoming layout with the kitchen at the centre because it sets the tone for the entire experience. From the moment members walk in, they’re greeted with a sense of warmth, and that’s something we’ve worked hard to achieve in every detail.

We also drew inspiration from the local quirks of Hatton Garden, incorporating subtle nods to the area’s rich history in gemstones and jewellery. From the sparkling accents in the décor to the thoughtful design elements throughout, we wanted the space to reflect the character and charm of its surroundings. It’s more than just a place to work—it’s a workspace with a touch of local magic.”

Every inch of Farringdon, St Cross Street has been designed with purpose. It’s functional, welcoming, and most importantly, a place where members can connect, collaborate, and thrive within a supportive community. We can’t wait to welcome you in!

In today’s hyper-competitive recruitment landscape, finding and attracting the best talent has never been more challenging. Recruitment firms need more than a database of potential candidates—they need to offer something unique to stand out from the crowd. A growing solution? Flexible, inspiring workspaces that boost the firm’s appeal not only to candidates but also to their own employees.

At Work.Life, we understand the importance of creating environments that enhance productivity and collaboration while offering the flexibility recruitment firms need to stay agile and competitive. Here’s how we help recruitment firms stand out in the race for top talent.

Flexible workspaces to support dynamic teams

Recruitment teams often juggle multiple projects, meet clients, and interview candidates in quick succession. Traditional office spaces can sometimes be too rigid, limiting your team’s ability to stay mobile.

Work.Life’s flexible workspaces allow recruitment firms to scale up or down as needed. Whether it’s a hot desk for a day or a dedicated office for a growing team, we make it easy to adjust your space to match your business needs. Plus, with access to meeting rooms and private call booths, recruitment consultants can have confidential conversations with clients and candidates in a professional setting, any time.

Prime locations to attract talent and clients

Location can play a pivotal role in attracting top-tier talent and establishing trust with clients. Work.Life has locations in the heart of London’s most vibrant business districts, such as Soho, Fitzrovia, and our new St Cross Street space off Leather Lane. These desirable postcodes make it easier to access a wide talent pool and impress clients with a central, well-connected office.

By positioning your firm in one of these prime spots, you automatically boost your reputation and visibility, making it more attractive to both clients and candidates.

A wellbeing-first culture that retains top talent

Attracting top talent is one thing but keeping them engaged and happy is another. Today’s job seekers are increasingly looking for employers who prioritise wellbeing and work-life balance.

At Work.Life, we’ve put wellbeing at the forefront of our offering. Our spaces are designed with natural light, comfortable lounges, and break areas to help recruitment consultants recharge between tasks. We also provide wellness perks like yoga classes, mental health workshops, and access to fresh coffee and snacks—all of which contribute to a more positive, balanced work environment. Happy, healthy employees are far more likely to stay loyal to your firm and bring their best performance to the job.

Networking opportunities to build stronger connections

In recruitment, relationships are everything. Work.Life’s co-working community offers more than just a workspace—it’s a hub for networking and collaboration. By sharing a space with other professionals across industries, recruitment firms can expand their network, share insights, and even find new business opportunities.

Whether it’s through our regular networking events, social gatherings, or the natural interactions that come with a shared workspace, recruitment consultants can form stronger connections that lead to new opportunities and long-term partnerships.

Adding to that strong Employer Brand

Having an office at Work.Life is more than just a place to work—it’s a space that shows your team you care about their happiness, productivity, and connection. With thoughtful design, community-focused perks, and a welcoming environment, it’s easy to create a culture where employees feel valued and motivated. Beyond being great for your team, a friendly, inspiring office also boosts your company’s reputation, making it easier to attract top talent and stand out as an employer of choice. It’s a win-win for both your people and your brand!

Want to take your employer brand even further? Our friends at Wiser are experts at helping businesses create brands that people love.

Technology and support to streamline the recruitment process

In today’s digital world, access to the right technology is crucial for recruitment firms. Work.Life provides seamless, high-speed internet, video conferencing facilities, and tech support to keep your operations running smoothly.

The fast-paced world of tech startups demands agility, creativity, and scalability. One critical factor that often gets overlooked is the workspace itself. As your startup grows, so do your needs, and this is where flexible workspaces like Work.Life come into play.

Unlocking Agility

Flexible office solutions give tech startups the advantage of scaling without the burden of long-term leases. Since 2019, the number of leases longer than 10 years has decreased by 70%, highlighting a shift towards short-term options. Startups can now rent spaces month-to-month, making it easier to adapt quickly to growth spurts or market changes. This rise in flexibility is reshaping how startups operate, offering them the agility to respond swiftly to evolving business needs without being tied to lengthy contracts.

Fostering Innovation

Collaboration flourishes in flexible workspaces, where spontaneous interactions and networking can lead to breakthrough ideas. According to research from the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), 76% of businesses surveyed now offer flexible working, showcasing the growing trend. The cross-industry connections made in coworking spaces inject fresh perspectives, driving innovation. These environments encourage creative problem-solving and open communication, which can propel startups to the next level.

Access to State-of-the-Art Resources

With short-term, flexible workspaces, tech startups can access top-tier infrastructure without heavy upfront costs. Flex offices often provide high-speed internet, modern meeting rooms, complimentary refreshments and more, which levels the playing field for smaller businesses. It’s no surprise that 70% of occupiers use flexible space to keep up with rapid industry demands.

Attracting and Retaining Top Talent

The modern workforce prioritises flexibility, especially in tech. Developers, designers, and engineers value work-life balance, making flexible workspaces appealing. With hot desking, remote work, and hybrid schedules, startups can attract top talent. Initiatives like gyms discounts, productivity sessions and a focus on wellness as an integral part of workplace culture (did someone say Work.Life’s Wellness Wednesdays?) can also boost employee satisfaction.

Flexibility for Remote and Hybrid Teams

Flexible workspaces are designed to meet the needs of hybrid work models by offering a central hub that accommodates remote capabilities. This is increasingly important, as 70% of companies now offer remote work options, whether hybrid or fully remote, enabling startups to stay connected and productive from anywhere. Moreover, flexible memberships that focus on the time spent in the space, along with state-of-the-art meeting rooms and event spaces available for rent without a membership, enhance collaboration and engagement among teams.

Flexible workspaces aren’t just about desks and meeting rooms; they are catalysts for growth and innovation in the tech sector. They offer the flexibility, resources, and community startups need to thrive in a competitive and ever-evolving industry.

The post Why Workplace Happiness Should Be a Top Priority for Leaders in 2024 appeared first on Work.Life.

]]>
In 2024, the workplace is no longer just a place to clock in and out, grind through tasks, and get paid. The rules of engagement have changed, and one key metric is gaining prominence: happiness. For leaders, understanding why happiness at work should be a top priority is not just about keeping employees smiling—it’s about ensuring productivity, innovation, and growth in a rapidly evolving business landscape. Let’s dive into why this matters and what leaders need to know to foster happiness at work.

The Science Behind Happiness and Productivity

Research consistently shows a direct correlation between employee happiness and productivity. A study by the University of Oxford revealed that happy workers are 13% more productive than their unhappy counterparts. Happiness boosts motivation, creativity, and problem-solving abilities, which translates into better performance and outcomes.

Happy employees are also more likely to stay with a company longer, reducing turnover costs and preserving institutional knowledge. In 2024, when the competition for top talent is fiercer than ever, retaining skilled employees can provide a significant edge.

Happiness Is the New Engagement

For years, companies have focused on employee engagement as the holy grail of workplace success. But here’s the catch: engagement without happiness is like running on a treadmill—you’re moving, but not necessarily getting anywhere. Engaged employees may be dedicated to their work, but if they are not happy, they are at a higher risk of burnout and disengagement over time.

It’s all about fostering an environment where employees feel valued, respected, and genuinely excited to contribute. Happiness at work is not just about ping-pong tables and free snacks; it’s about cultivating a culture where people feel psychologically safe, have meaningful connections, and find purpose in their roles.

The Business Case for Prioritizing Happiness

Investing in happiness is not just a feel-good exercise—it’s a smart business strategy. Here’s why:

  1. Improved Employee Retention: Happy employees are 87% less likely to leave their jobs. In this era of the “Great Resignation,” keeping your best talent should be a top priority.
  2. Enhanced Innovation: Creativity thrives in happy environments. When people feel safe and supported, they’re more likely to take risks and think outside the box—essential for innovation and staying competitive.
  3. Better Customer Service: Happy employees are naturally more inclined to provide excellent customer service, leading to happier customers, positive reviews, and increased sales.
  4. Reduced Absenteeism: Happy employees tend to be healthier, which means fewer sick days and less absenteeism, reducing overall costs and maintaining team productivity.

How to Create a Happy Workplace in 2024

Here are actionable steps leaders can take to prioritize happiness at work:

  1. Listen and Act on Employee Feedback: Regularly conduct employee surveys and be open to feedback. Actively involve employees in decision-making processes to make them feel heard and valued.
  2. Promote Work-Life Balance: Encourage flexible working arrangements, time off, and mental health days. A balanced employee is a happy employee.
  3. Invest in Professional Development: Offer opportunities for growth and advancement. Employees are happier when they see a future for themselves within the company.
  4. Build a Positive Culture: Foster a workplace where recognition is a daily practice. Celebrate achievements, both big and small, to make employees feel appreciated and valued. A culture of recognition not only boosts morale but also strengthens employee loyalty, encouraging people to stay and grow with the company.
  5. Encourage Social Connections: Foster a sense of community through team-building activities, mentorship programs, and social events that encourage collaboration and camaraderie.

P.S. Looking to deepen your understanding of what drives employee loyalty? Check out Wiser’s blog for insights into how factors like purpose, growth opportunities, and recognition play a key role in creating a workplace where people want to stay and thrive.

The Future of Work Is Happy

In 2024, happiness at work is not just a trend; it’s a necessity. As leaders, the task is clear: create an environment where employees feel valued, supported, and empowered to do their best work. Focusing on happiness isn’t just about ‘good vibes’; it’s about building a strong, adaptable team ready for whatever the future brings.

So if happiness isn’t on your radar yet, now’s the time to change that. Not just because it feels great, but because it really works. And if you’re looking for a place where happiness is a priority, Work.Life has you covered. 9 out of 10 members say they’re happier since joining us!

But the business benefits don’t stop there. Coworking spaces can also save you a lot on operational costs compared to traditional offices.

Here’s 6 ways a shared office space could be cheaper than a traditional setup.

  1. Scalability: Expand with confidence

Most businesses have one top goal in mind: growth. But it can be unpredictable.

Say you’re a team of three with big dreams of expanding over the next three years. You could lease a big office to prepare for future expansion. But what if your growth is slower than you’d hoped? Or what if you play it safe and rent a smaller office, only to outgrow it faster than you expected?

With coworking, you can easily adjust your workspace based on your needs without the hassle and cost of breaking a lease or hunting for a new office. This scalability perk can save you a hefty sum compared to the rigid leases you often get with a traditional office.

The adaptability of a coworking space means you can grow your business without the fear of overcommitting or being underprepared. It provides a safety net for your investment, allowing you to expand your business confidently.

  1. Flexibility: Only pay for what you need

More and more businesses are ditching the regular 9 to 5 and long-term office leases, opting for short-term, flexible lease agreements with great financial benefit.

With a shared workspace, you only sign up for month-by-month payments. So, you dodge the commitments and financial requirements of a long-term lease – perfect for keeping those costs down.

Coworking spaces are usually charged per workstation and offer the most flexibility with the shortest terms. Here at Work.Life, you can go for short-term or long-term rentals or a pay-as-you-go monthly membership for even more freedom. That means greater control over your workspace and the flexibility to pick the best option for your budget and schedule. It’s a win-win.

No more long-term contracts, security deposits or all the other financial burdens. Coworking spaces are a budget-friendly dream for start-ups, SMEs, and freelancers.

  1. Sharing’s caring: Spread the cost

Coworking spaces are fantastic for cutting the usual costs of renting a private office. We’re talking Wi-Fi, utilities, daily cleaning, kitchen supplies, facility management… the list goes on and on.

With a coworking space, all these amenities are nicely bundled into one monthly payment, making budgeting a breeze. Plus, no more juggling multiple bills. It’s ideal for keeping operational costs in check (and who doesn’t want that?!).

Shared facilities also mean more chances to network and collaborate. Not only is this great for boosting productivity and creativity, but also for sparking potential partnerships that could save you even more money and drive business growth.

  1. Happy people: Reduce recruitment costs

Let’s move onto our favourite topic – happiness at work! It’s no secret that a happier team is more engaged and productive. And guess what? Coworking spaces have loads of ways to make that happen.

Shared office spaces offer awesome perks through greater access to amenities and activities. From on-site support and fully equipped kitchens to regular wellness activities and social events, our coworking spaces have plenty of facilities and a positive community vibe to promote a healthy work-life balance.

By prioritising your employees’ happiness, you can maximise retention, minimise absenteeism, and lower staff turnover. This will save you big time on the costs of recruiting, onboarding and training new people, substantially boosting your bottom line.

  1. Setting up: Lower initial spend

Traditional leased offices will be an empty shell when you move in. You’ll have to spend time and money fitting out the space with furniture, utilities and other overheads that need sorting.

With a coworking space, everything’s ready when you arrive so you can hit the ground running and be your most productive self. The Wi-Fi is raring to go, the printers are full of ink, the conference rooms are set up for video calls, and the kettle’s always on.

That’s it! No pricey office fit out; plug your laptops in and get going. This setup is super beneficial if you’re looking to reduce upfront costs.

  1. Prestigious postcode: Without the price tag

Finding an office in a prime location can be a total headache and pricey. You want a central location with handy transport links, things to do nearby and a place you know your team will love working.

This comes at a price. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Shared office spaces are often found in the top cities to do business and the coolest neighbourhoods. And, as we’ve mentioned, coworking spaces keep overheads low thanks to an all-inclusive monthly fee.

Suddenly, those sought-after locations in London and other major cities become way more affordable. So, you can snag your favourite spot to set up shop without having to compromise.
