Th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is week, our host Angelica sat down with <a href=\"http:\/\/theselfspace.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Self Space<\/a>\u00a0F<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ounder, Jodie Cariss, to explore the benefits of therapy for you and your employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/play.acast.com\/s\/workit\/discussingmentalhealthintheworkplace-withjodiecarriss-founderoftheselfspace-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>LISTEN TO THE WHOLE CONVERSATION<\/b><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jodie launched <a href=\"https:\/\/theselfspace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Self Space<\/a> in response to a growing need for an improved type of mental health support. Self Space inspires <\/span><b>\u201ca contemporary approach to maintaining good mental health\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self Space aligns itself as a prevention service, making it ideal for workplaces who are keen to maintain good mental health amongst their employees and avoid burnout, <\/span><b>\u201cOur position is to support people [&#8230;] before they reach crisis point. To educate people before they can\u2019t get out of bed\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>What can employers do to improve their team&#8217;s mental health?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the workplace, Jodie and her team find that employers aren\u2019t always equipping their team with the tools to handle the difficult aspects of their work environments, <\/span><b>\u201cwe often say the opposite thing to what we\u2019re feeling [&#8230;] We\u2019ve become accustomed to having to be okay [&#8230;] I think some truthfulness in our dialogue is necessary\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At work, this means being open to listening to each other and receiving both good and bad feedback: <\/span><b>\u201cCompanies often mirror the dysfunction in families and we need to take a confident stance to stop that happening\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jodie believes creating a sense of community amongst employees is vital for a team which relies on each other, <\/span><b>\u201cthere needs to be genuine space and time to be interested in each other\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This may mean taking a more creative approach to team activities, <\/span><b>\u201cAvoid creating a drinking culture [&#8230;] this can slide out of control and become the only way they can relate to each other\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A business can also support their staff by taking responsibility for their wellbeing. Encouraging reviews which aren\u2019t only to discuss the meeting of targets or business challenges is a way to show accountability, <\/span><b>\u201cTalk about mental health in a positive conversation as opposed to it being associated with dysfunction. It needs to be imbedded in the culture\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Are approaches to mental health in the workplace changing?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jodie has found that a lot of companies are showing a real willingness to change, <strong>\u201cWe sell bundles of therapy sessions to companies which are completely confidential. That shows generosity\u201d<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can, however, be as easy as being more thoughtful day to day. A company&#8217;s genuine concern can be evident in the little things,\u00a0<\/span><b>\u201clike when people bring food to meetings or take time to check in on personal highlights\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as opposed to just honing in on the business agenda straight away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress in the workplace can have a huge effect on a person\u2019s mental health. Jodie believes stress is a symptom of bad processing and management of what we\u2019re doing, <\/span><b>\u201cStress is a choice in my view [&#8230;] There are often conversations that need to be had that will prevent it and therapy will help you with the more challenging things<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jodie\u2019s vision is for a Self Space on every high street, <\/span><b>\u201cI want people to access therapy in the same way they go and have a hair cut, it\u2019s not a big deal\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Click\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/play.acast.com\/s\/workit\/discussingmentalhealthintheworkplace-withjodiecarriss-founderoftheselfspace-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>\u00a0to listen more about how you can open up the conversation of mental health in your workplace and how this can better your company culture by improving your team&#8217;s happiness at work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How could therapy increase the happiness and productivity of your workplace?
