We ranked some of London\u2019s major business districts to find out which areas set the best example when it comes to green business practices, commuting and more.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For the eco-conscious, seeing how companies and even entire cities are revolutionising to combat climate change is a reassuring move towards positive change.<\/p>\n<p>Businesses are modernising to reduce their carbon footprint by switching to renewable energy sources and reducing their energy usage. <a href=\"https:\/\/thecsrjournal.in\/ibm-employees-work-environmentally-sustainable-companies-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Research<\/a> shows that 71% of workers prioritise working for a company with a strong environmental policy.<\/p>\n<p>Town planning also has an environmental focus, encouraging commuters to cycle to work or switch to electric vehicles by introducing more bike lanes and EV charging points.<\/p>\n<p>As a <a href=\"https:\/\/work.life\/sustainability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">B Corp certified business<\/a>, this is a topic close to our hearts, and we\u2019re proud to see London coming out top in <a href=\"https:\/\/britishbusinessenergy.co.uk\/blog\/eco-cities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">global rankings of eco-friendly cities to work in<\/a>. We\u2019ve taken this a step further, looking at key London boroughs to discover the different ways local businesses, councils and professionals are spearheading the fight against climate change, making their area one of the greenest London boroughs to work in.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Businesses_across_London_are_innovating_to_reduce_their_carbon_footprint\"><\/span>Businesses across London are innovating to reduce their carbon footprint<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Structural improvements to buildings, such as better insulation, energy-saving heating systems and controls, and optimising lighting usage, including switching to LEDs, are just some of the ways businesses are striving to improve their EPC rating, making offices more energy-efficient. And, of course, switching to renewable energy sources, such as solar panels or wind turbines, drastically reduces greenhouse gas emissions. At Work.Life, we\u2019re proud to say we fall among the cohort of businesses taking such measures.<\/p>\n<p>The gold standard of sustainable construction is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeam.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method)<\/a> certification, whereby buildings are assessed for their sustainability performance throughout their lifespan, from construction through to operation and refurbishment. <a href=\"https:\/\/bregroup.com\/buzz\/all-about-breeam\/?cn-reloaded=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Over 2 million buildings<\/a> are now BREEAM certified, many of which are in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>These innovations move businesses towards the goal of net-zero status. Last year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/calling-all-small-businesses-to-lead-the-charge-to-net-zero\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Together with our Planet Campaign<\/a> encouraged small businesses to pledge to cut their emissions to net-zero by 2050. With the sale of petrol and diesel cars to be banned in the UK by 2040, EV charging points are being placed across the country to accommodate drivers switching to electric.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Islington_is_one_of_the_greenest_areas_in_London_thanks_to_its_eco-friendly_commuters\"><\/span>Islington is one of the greenest areas in London thanks to its eco-friendly commuters<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Commuters across London are doing their part. More professionals walk to work in <a href=\"https:\/\/work.life\/office-space\/london\/soho\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Westminster<\/a> than in any other London location (9.7%), and the borough provides more EV charging points than anywhere else in the city (around 479 per 100,000 people). Meanwhile, the <a href=\"https:\/\/work.life\/office-space\/london\/liverpool-street\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City of London<\/a> has the smallest proportion of those driving to work (5%).<\/p>\n<p>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/work.life\/office-space\/london\/farringdon\/\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Islington<\/a> comes top overall. More people cycle to work in Islington than any other London borough we analysed (5%). Where climate change is more commonly talked about and awareness is raised, this is reflected in activities from litter-picking to environmental fundraising.
